K 2010

The K 2010, an international trade fair for plastics and rubber, will take place from 27 October to 3 November 2010 in Düsseldorf, Germany, under the motto “It’s K time”. The fair exhibits will reflect the triad of machinery, raw material production as well as plastics and rubber processing. The special exibition “Visions in Polymers” will present the future of this material.

Trade fair in Nuremberg

FachPack 2010

With the FachPack one of the most important European specialist trade fairs for packaging is taking place once again from 28 until 30 September 2010 in Nuremberg. Last year more than 33,800 visitors found out about subjects including packaging materials, formats and recycling. FachPack 2010 will once again be completed by the PrintPack on the subject of packaging processing and LogIntern, which focuses on packaging logistics.

University of Bonn

Cold Chain Management

On 27 and 28 September 2010 the Cold Chain Management Group of the University of Bonn, Germany, will host the 4th International Workshop on Cold Chain Management. The focus will be on all the different stages of the process, from production to consumer consumption. Aspects of cold chain management in private households will also be taken into consideration. Among others experts will show how health risks can be minimized and how consumer knowledge can be improved.

Stuttgart Packaging Days

The “Stuttgart Packaging Days” arer one of the oldest international German-speaking conferences on plastic and multilayer packaging. The 17th edition will be held on 21 and 22 September in Stuttgart. Speakers from research and industry will be giving lectures on aspects such as the carbon footprint, raw materials and packaging materials.

Permeation through Packaging Materials

On 6 and 7 July 2010, the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging (IVV) is hosting a seminar with lots of practical exercises on the topic of “Permeation through Packaging Materials”. The lectures will also give an overview of plastic packaging materials for food, as well as their production and distribution. The event is concerned specifically with active packaging, barrier films and the influence of light on packed food. There will also be a laboratory presentation during which participants will be able to evaluate measurement results themselves.

Meat and Sausage Products

“Meat and Sausage Products – Current Trends – Future Developments“. This will be the topic of the annual conference of the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging (IVV) on 22 and 23 June 2010 in Freising, Germany. Experts will be presenting the requirements specified by EU legislation and will explain the influence of light and oxygen on the quality of meat and sausage products. The event will also focus on trends in modified atmosphere packaging, microbiological risks in oxygen-free food and packaging for sausage products that can be safely closed and easily opened.

Which film for which use? Answers to this question will be provided on June 15 and 16 at a seminar in Osnabrück, Germany, organized by Innoform Coaching GbR. The focus will be on how barrier films are currently used. Among other things, a number of sample packages filled with original goods will be discussed. In addition, experts will give a detailed overview of the broad range of barrier films available and also talk about the processing of these films.

On 19 May 2010 the Packaging Academy of the German Packaging Institute will be hosting a workshop on the topic “REACH & Packaging”. Nafispack project

First Nafispack Conference

The first Nafispack Conference on 22 April 2010 in Brussels will focus on “Natural Antimicrobials for Innovative and Safe Packaging”. Speakers from all over the world will be reporting on active and intelligent packaging, as well as on natural antimicrobials that help extend the shelf life of fresh food. There will also be a presentation of the EU-project Nafispack – the largest initiative in Europe for the development of innovative and safe packaging systems to extend the shelf life of fresh food.

The challenge of preserving the quality of food from harvest to consumption was the main topic of this year’s Round Table of the Cofresco Forum on 15 April 2010. Scientists and industry experts discussed current trends and research results on the topic: “Healthy Food – How Packaging, Storage and Preparation Techniques Help to Preserve the Original Food Quality” in Minden.

International Packaging Institute

IPI Sustainability Day

Against the backdrop of the current sustainability debate, the International Packaging Institute (IPI) hosted the IPI Sustainability Day on 25 November 2009 in Neuhausen am Rheinfall, Switzerland. On the agenda were fundamental conceptual aspects and concrete solutions on packaging processes, in terms of recycling for example. The current status of the European legislation regarding sustainable packaging was also the focus of a lecture, as well as the prevention of waste. A joint workshop offered participants and speakers the chance to exchange their points of view with one another.

On the subject of “Converting Processes for Tailormade Packaging”, the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging (IVV) invited guests to a conference on 25 November. The event took place within the framework of the 6th International Converting Exhibition ICE in Munich. The schedule included a lecture on multi-layered barrier films.

2009 GDL Food Technology Congress

Around 300 attendees found out about the latest approaches to food technology research at the 2009 GDL Food Technology Congress in Lemgo from 22 until 24 October. The subject of packaging was also on the agenda. Aspects discussed included active and passive packaging concepts and the optimisation of barrier properties.
