6th Round Table of the Cofresco Forum

Focus on "Healthy Food"

 

The challenge of preserving the quality of food from harvest to consumption was the main topic of this year's Round Table of the Cofresco Forum. On 15 April 2010 scientists and industry experts discussed current trends and research results on the topic: “Healthy Food – How Packaging, Storage and Preparation Techniques Help to Preserve the Original Food Quality” in Minden. The event was hosted by the Cofresco Forum and its cooperation partners, the University of Wageningen and the Danish company IPU.

 

The Round Table, which took place for the 6th time, offered lectures on EU legislation in the field of active food packaging, the preservation of fresh cut food and the preparation and storage of food at home. The speakers were Professor Per Væggemose Nielsen, IPU (Denmark), Dr. Ulphard Thoden van Velzen, Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research (Netherlands), and Dr. Bernhard Trierweiler, Max Rubner-Institut (Germany). Professor Dr. Monika Pischetsrieder, Chair of Food Chemistry, University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany) also presented the results of her research work. The study deals with the isolation of active components and their incorporation into packaging materials. In 2007 she received the Cofreco Research Prize.

 

In the afternoon, a joint tour of Cofresco’s production facilities provided a fascinating insight into everyday industrial practice. The company produces and packages products such as freezer bags, ice-cube bags, cling film and baking paper for its Toppits® brand. Cofresco specializes in the production of household products for the freezing, freshkeeping, storing and disposing of food.

 

“Not only scientists but also consumers are interested in the correct handling of food in the household”, said Martin Rogall, Director of Innovation Management Cofresco Minden. “The Round Table illustrated the wide range of this topic and presented interesting research results.”
